“Most of the music on this four-CD set from 1997 has been reissued many times, both on LP and CD, but this is the most "complete" set thus far. Louis Armstrong recorded for RCA during two separate times. During 1932-1933, he led an erratic (and under-rehearsed) big band on a series of numbers, but all of the selections have their moments of interest. Although not up to the level of his Hot Five and Seven recordings of five years earlier, these spirited tracks find Armstrong mostly in excellent form both instrumentally and vocally, and the reissue has four alternate takes never released before.”

“Catharism was the name given to a Christian religious sect that appeared in the Languedoc region of what is now southern France and flourished in the 12th and 13th centuries. The Cathars saw matter as intrinsically evil. They denied that Jesus could become incarnate and still be the son of God and thus, the Catholic Church regarded the sect as dangerously heretical. Faced with what they saw as a rapidly spreading cancer, the Church called for a crusade, which was carried out by knights from Northern France and Germany and was known as the Albigensian Crusade. This campaign, and the inquisition that followed it, eradicated the Cathars completely. It also had the effect of weakening the semi- independent southern principalities in the area, ultimately bringing them under direct control of the King of France.”

By the end of the 1980s, the rights to Bowie's pre-1983 catalogue (released under the RCA label) reverted back to Bowie. Rykodisc had approached Bowie in 1988 to re-release albums on CD and Bowie agreed, and in September 1989 the Sound + Vision box set was released. By April 1990 the box set had sold over 200,000 copies, which, for a set costing $50–$60 (in 1990 currency) was considered "phenomenal."”

“Critics compared the 2002 four-disc Today, Tomorrow & Forever to the Beatles Anthology series of evolving outtakes. That formula is repeated with less success this time around. Little here is preferable to the original Elvis-approved releases, bearing in mind that this was someone who recorded dozens of takes live in the studio until he got it right. Interestingly, the movie and Nashville discs actually trump the '50s disc of unreleased stereo masters from '57. "G.I. Blues," (a better version), "Flaming Star," stuff from Wild In the Country, and even selections from Blue Hawaii sound darn good all these years later, including a version of "Can't Help Falling in Love" that bridges the hit and film renditions. The Nashville disc starts with Elvis Is Back! outtakes, all at least listenable; "Soldier Boy" may be better than the official release. The gospel "Working on the Building" is a killer. "U.S. Male" pales mightily next to the single. And so on. Rounded out with a pretty standard 1972 live show, this provides some interesting tidbits for Elvis fanatics.”
